Penguin Galaxy – Hardback Science Fiction Set – Illustrated Bibliography

Published by Daisy on

Penguin Galaxy books in a row sm

In October 2016, Penguin released their Galaxy Series – including six of their greatest masterworks of science fiction and fantasy, curated by Neil Gaiman. Each volume features bright, bold “bare boards” naked hardcover designs with titles in stylized, embossed gold leaf type. The series was curated by crowd favourite Neil Gaiman, and each volume opens with his introductory series essay on the charm and value of science fiction.

Recently, many major outlets significantly reduced their prices for volumes in this series, so I’m making a quick post to let you know that now is a good time to pick them up.

The series includes many of my own favourites, particularly Stranger in a Strange Land and The Once and Future King. It’s nice to see these in sturdy volumes for a change, but it is worth noting that unfortunately the binding is glued, not sewn, and the boards are covered in paper, not buckram. The bright bindings do really pop on the shelf though!

Indeed, Daisy. I shall end up getting The Left Hand of Darkness, no doubt: completionist that I am. I’m looking for a nice hardcover of Nettle and Bone, by T Kingfisher, the current Hugo Award Winner: check it out unless you’ve read it .

Haha, I’m a completionist too. I have the Subterranean Press edition of Nettle and Bone which is lovely, but I think now only available on the second hand market?

My books – I’ve bought 4 of these so far: are sewn. (This is 2023, December.) Not glued. Still on the fence over The Left Hand of Darkness.

    Oh, that’s good to hear!
