Introduction
Welcome to my online shrine to twin illustrators Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone. As a collector of the Grahame Johnstone’s work, one thing I found tricky is that several publications were put out by publishers with the same name but different contents (particularly by Dean – I’m looking side-eyed at you, fairy tale collections). This collector’s guide and complete illustrated bibliography is a complete catalogue of their work to help anyone looking for a particular book or story.
Where possible I have included images and links to vintage sellers for each of the works, as well short notes such as tables of contents if relevant. Some of the books are quite rare, so if you don’t see any results from a seller search, just be patient and come back to try again another day. The list is based on my own research and private collection, supplemented by an article by Betty and Anthony Reid in Book and Magazine Collector, No. 204, March 2001, and contributions by other collectors and lovers of their work over the years (e.g. the good folks at the Seven Stories Centre and March of Time books). If I have only read about an edition but not sighted it, the entry is marked with a “?”. If you can kindly provide an image of any of the missing covers (or if you notice any errors or omissions), please do share in the comments below.
Biography
The work of twin artists Anne and Janet Grahame Johnstone is absolutely delightful and widely collected, and probably very familiar to anyone who grew up in the 60s, 70s or 80s. The twins were born on 1 June 1928 to the painter and stage designer, Doris Zinkeisen, and her husband, Grahame Johnstone, a director of Johnnie Walker whisky and a captain in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
The Johnstone sisters’ popularity took off in the early 1950s, when they acquired a reputation as talented illustrators. They always worked together, passing drawings back and forth across their studio until both twins were satisfied with the final outcome. Janet specialised in animals and birds, while Anne focused on the period costumes that were a key feature of their work. Janet and Anne were also involved in a number of programmes for British television, including Charlie the Cat, the Flower Pot Men, Tai Lu, Andy Pandy, and adventures of the cowboy Ross Salmon, which also produced spin-off publications.
Tragically, Janet died as a result of smoke inhalation following a fire in the kitchen in 1979. Anne found herself unexpectedly responsible for the entire business previously shared with her sister, yet managed to honour all of their outstanding commissions. Anne continued to work on her own in the 1980s and 90s, right up until a few days before her death on 25 May 1998.
Artwork
The twins were prolific illustrators and original artwork occasionally comes up for sale – when I see a beautiful piece come up, I’ll add a link here for collectors. In the meantime, you can also jump over to this page to view a small gallery of their works.
I have a gallery of their illustrations in Finding Out magazine (and even some from Robin Magazine, for the truly dedicated).
And I have a separate page with illustrations from the favourite books in my collection – the illustrated Purnell myths & legends series written by Roger Lancelyn Green – it took me over ten years to track down the last one I needed in that series, and I was sooooo happy to finally have them all!
The Grahame Johnstone Twins Illustrated Bibliography: Complete List of Titles
If you are a lover of their work, please say “hello” in the comments and share your favourite book! Or let us know if there is one you are trying desperately to find and see if a community member can help you. Because there are over two hundred books in the bibliography (and I’m mindful of potential bandwidth issues), you can sort the works by title or date, and expand or limit the number of books that show up per page using the table tools below.
