How do I find special editions of books?

Advice from a Collector

Introduction

Once you’ve started building up an an interesting book collection, you’re bound to start noticing special editions on other peoples shelves. Where do people find these gems, you wonder? Maybe they talk about getting them through exclusive (and expensive book clubs), or maybe they are investing in beautiful but expensive publishers like Folio Society or Easton Press. Now, you want some of these special editions for your own book collection – books with sprayed edges, beautiful designs, limited editions – without that sort of serious financial commitment. But how can you get them? Well, I’m glad you asked, because I’m here to help! This page is where I maintain a list of upcoming preorders and recent releases of special edition books that anyone can buy, and I’ve also included some of the best stores you can haunt to find them as well if you want to jump to the end of the page. Enjoy!

Custom Stencilled Edges

In addition to the editions listed on this page, there are also several artists who also offer custom stencilled edges, and/or do very small runs of their own limited designs. Sometimes these options may be more affordable for you depending on your location. Some of the artists I think are doing the nicest work at the moment include:

A couple of other interesting options to consider are:

  • Ruined By Fiction (India) who do custom foiled hardcover designs
  • BriMarie (US) paints pretty hidden fore-edge paintings under gilt edging that you might like to check out as well ツ

p.s. Please do let me know in the comments if you find anything here you like (so I know if this list is useful!), or feel free to send me details of any books you think should be added ツ
