Abbeville Illustrated Classics

Introduction

The Abbeville Illustrated Classics are a small but appealing line of illustrated collector’s editions from Abbeville Press, an independent American publisher best known for fine art and illustrated books. These editions sit in a useful middle ground: more decorative and art-led than standard hardbacks, but generally more affordable and accessible than fine press editions. These are the sort of books that look beautiful on a shelf but are still practical reading and heirloom copies: beautiful bindings (cloth- and leather-bound hardbacks), smyth-sewn pages, foil stamping, tip-on cover images, readable text, and thoughtful introductions.

What makes the series especially interesting for collectors is its focus on classic stories paired with important illustrators. Some volumes revive celebrated historical illustrations by artists such as Norman Rockwell, N. C. Wyeth, Clara M. Burd, and Charles Robinson. Newer titles, including A Christmas Carol and October Shadows, use contemporary artwork by John A. Rice while keeping the same giftable, designer feel.

The current series includes a couple of handsome two-volume sets, two children’s classics in matching clothbound formats, and two atmospheric illustrated ghost-story volumes.

Interestingly, each leaf artwork is shown twice: first in daylight, and then again backlit, creating a spooky jack-o’-lantern-like glow.

A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens, illustrated by John A. Rice

Artist John A. Rice reimagines A Christmas Carol through the mood of Victorian Spiritualism and fin de siècle Symbolism, presenting Scrooge’s encounters with the spirits as a journey from darkness to light.

The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett, illustrated by Charles Robinson

Clothbound edition with decorative gilt cover and inset illustration, illustrated throughout with classic colour illustrations by Charles Robinson (from the first British 1911 edition).

This edition also includes an introduction by Alice A. Carter exploring Robinson and other artists who have illustrated The Secret Garden.

Little Women - Louisa May Alcott, illustrated by Clara M. Burd

Clothbound edition with decorative gilt cover and inset illustration, illustrated throughout with Burd’s 1926 illustrations.

This edition pairs the March sisters with the work of Clara M. Burd, a stained-glass designer and illustrator. It also includes a new introduction by Alice A. Carter, who writes about Burd and the world of early twentieth-century women illustrators.

Treasure Island and Kidnapped - Robert Louis Stevenson, illustrated by N. C. Wyeth

Two-volume clothbound/slipcased collector’s edition, pairing Stevenson with Wyeth’s classic adventure illustrations.

Wyeth’s work for Treasure Island and Kidnapped was first published in the early twentieth century and helped establish his reputation as one of the great illustrators of adventure literature. This set also includes an introduction by Christine B. Podmaniczky, a leading N. C. Wyeth scholar.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain, illustrated by Norman Rockwell

Two-volume clothbound/slipcased collector’s edition, with Rockwell colour plates and pen-and-ink drawings.

This set brings together Mark Twain’s two most famous novels with Norman Rockwell’s illustrations, originally created for Heritage Press editions in the 1930s and 1940s. Rockwell produced eight full-colour paintings for each book, along with pen-and-ink drawings. Abbeville’s edition reproduces the colour plates from new photography of Rockwell’s original paintings and includes new introductions with rarely seen preliminary sketches.
