A Collector's Guide to the Bridgerton series

Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novels are a cozy cornerstone of Regency romance. Centered on eight close‑knit siblings moving through London’s ballrooms (and scandals) with plenty of wit, the series can be read in order or dipped into by favorite couple. Lady Whistledown’s society columns add a playful, gossip‑sheet frame that ties the books together.

They are hugely popular, in no small part due to the TV series adaptation, which premiered in 2020 on Netflix. There a lots of different editions, I'm just focusing here on the most popular ‘collectible' sets.

Prequel Quartet

Set a generation earlier (late 1700s), the Rokesbys are the Bridgertons’ close friends and neighbors. This series follows Bridgerton relatives Billie, Poppy, Georgiana and the Rokesby brothers. It's loosely related, as it gives the vibe of the Bridgerton family origins and family history.

Deluxe Collector's Editions

The most recent set of special editions are the Deluxe Collector’s Editions. These books feature sprayed page edges with a custom toile pattern, decorative endpapers, a ribbon bookmark, and a decorative connected spine design.

Luxe Editions

Each of these volumes is an omnibus edition binding together two books from the series, so the eight books are collected in four volumes. They features foiled covers, solid sprayed page edges, ribbon bookmarks, and decorative endpapers.

First Printings - US paperbacks

The original first editions of the series published by Avon featured covers typical of mass market paperback romance novels of the noughties – with delicately pretty, pastel covers. The second novel introduced a two-layered “step-back” style cover, where the top page is “stepped back” a quarter of an inch from the side to conceal an illustration beneath it which is more in keeping with the romance sexier “clinch” style of the 1990s (the first novel had its clinch illustration on the back cover).

First Printings - UK paperbacks

The UK paperback editions when first published by Priatkus in 2006 used an elongated fashion-focussed illustration style for their covers.

JQ & Juniper, 2023

JQ partnered with Juniper books to make a hardcover set with custom jackets. It features a romantic jacket design across the spines, peeking through wisteria to view a Regency garden scene. Each book features a symbol unique to the story.

The limited edition hand numbered bronze foil release sold out in 4 1/2 hours.

This nine volume book set is complete with all the novels based on the eight siblings, plus Violet’s novella and the accompanying collection of epilogues.

This set of ‘B format' (i.e. 7.80”x 5.08”) naked hardbacks feature fully redesigned covers, sprayed edges, and a stunning design of the Bridgerton house across all 8 spines. The first book in the series, The Duke and I, was hand-signed by Julia Quinn for the first release. A later reprint edition was unsigned. Cover design by Ellen Rockell.
