Pride and Prejudice | Beautiful Editions & Collector’s Guide
Most Beautiful Editions of Pride and Prejudice
A Collector's Guide to Pride and Prejudice
Introduction
Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has been published in countless editions over the past two centuries. I'm not going to try to cover all of them (Goodreads lists over 17,000!), so this is a curated list of notable editions – including beautiful contemporary copies as well as out-of-print collectibles – along with some of my thoughts on their appeal to collectors.
Is your favourite edition here, or did I miss it?? I'd love for you to share your most beloved edition in the comments!
Publishing history
- First appearance (1813). Pride and Prejudice was first published on 28 January 1813 in three volumes by T. Egerton of Whitehall. The first edition sold briskly enough to warrant a second later that year and a third in 1817. Many novels of the day were published in parts because books were expensive to buy outright, and most middle-class accessed them through subscription-based circulating libraries. Libraries preferred multiple volume books because they could lend them to more customers at once. You can see this three-volume structure reflected in the book with Volume I (chapters 1-23) covering first impressions and ending with a status shift with Charlotte's sudden engagement. Vol II (chapters 24-42) raises the stakes and shifts the conflict from external misunderstandings to Elizabeth's internal transformation, ending with a major emotional reversal. And Vol III of course resolves the story and brings our happy ending.
- Anonymity (‘by a Lady'). Like many women authors of the time, Jane published anonymously and the original title page simply read “By the Author of Sense and Sensibility.” Sense and Sensibility had previously appeared in 1811 under the byline “By a Lady”. Austen remained publicly anonymous throughout her life. Sadly, she never actually saw her name on a title page – it didn't appear on until after her death in 1817, when her brother Henry revealed her authorship in a biographical notice prefacing Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.
- Illustrations. Early illustrated Austen editions were typically limited to a frontispiece or two, and often “Victorianised” the Regency setting. In the 1890s illustration boom, styles shifted toward more period-accurate visual worlds, cementing the public image of Austen's world and shaping popular imagination in ways later comparable to film/TV adaptations. Charles Brock is particularly renowned for this – he and his illustrator brother Henry Brock collected period artefacts and posed models in accurate dress and settings to ensure accuracy. In fact, he was asked to illustrate the novel multiple times – the 1895 Macmillan edition includes 40 pen and ink illustrations, the 1898 Dent 10-volume colour set – the first to have colour illustrations – was illustrated by him and his brother with 6 plates per volume (Henry did the two Pride and Prejudice volumes) , the 1907-1909 English Idylls series (24 watercolours per volume and a decorated title page), an uncommon 1913 Cassell edition with 4 colour plates, and the 1932 Nelson edition which included 8 new ink drawings by Charles.
- From First Impressions to Pride and Prejudice. Jane's first draft of the book (drafted when she was around 21, in 1796-97) was titled First Impressions. It was rejected by publishers, so she shelved it. When she revised it almost a decade later,. Partly because another novel called First Impressions (by Margaret Holford) had been published in the interim, and also likely to reflect literary fashion of the moment which favoured abstract dual-noun titles (and she had recently had success with this format in Sense and Sensibility).
- How many and how much? Evidence suggests an initial print run for Pride and Prejudice of roughly 1,500 copies, priced at 18 shillings for the set. This was quite respectable for a new novel at the time, and likely aimed at libraries and wealthier classes. Unlike Sense and Sensibility (which she published on commission), Austen sold the copyright of P&P to Egerton for £110.
- “My own darling child.” The day after publication, Austen wrote to her sister Cassandra about her excitement that a copy had arrived, and called the novel “my own darling child” – it held a very special place in her heart.
Which edition of Pride and Prejudice should I buy?
There are So! Many! Editions! of this book available, so this collector’s guide focuses just on the most beautiful editions or those that are particularly noteworthy to help you choose a volume for your own library. All of the editions in this list are beautiful, but in case you’d like a bit more direction, my personal top picks are marked with a ★.
The ‘best’ edition of Pride and Prejudice depends of course on your personal preference, but if you want a quick tl;dr then I’d recommend looking at the following:
- Best affordable edition: The Chiltern edition is lightweight, textured, portable and sturdy. The 2026 deluxe Puffin in Bloom edition also looks lovely and is affordable.
- Best standard edition: I'd toss up between the Marjolein Bastin edition (pretty nature illustrations and removable ephemera) and the Barbara Heller editions with period-accurate removable letters. (Why yes, I do have a thing for removable ephemera!)
- Best illustrated edition: The hardback is hard to find because it was only available via Kickstarter, but Teresa Vu's illustrated edition is gorgeous! Bill Donovan‘s dreamy watercolour illustrations are also a delight (and easier to track down).
- Best expensive edition: There are several lovely Folio Society editions to look at (illustrated by the Balbusso Twins, Niroot Puttapipat, Joan Hassall). And the 3-volume first edition facsimile by the British Library is gorgeous.
- Money is no object, I want top shelf: If you have money to burn, I think the 1894 Peacock edition is really something special. The Folio Society limited edition set of Austen's works illustrated by Sarah Young is also incredible.

Pride and Prejudice - Folio Society Puttapipat
Folio Society, London (2006).
Printed and bound by Cambridge
University Press in quarter brown buckram and cream paper boards with a ‘Regency’ stripe pattern in red, and a tipped-on colour vignette. It includes an introduction by Deirdre Le Faye, and seven beautiful colour plates by Niroot Puttapipat. This was the first in a series of three matching Austen titles they illustrated, the others being Emma and Persuasion.
Mid-20th Century Classics
Pride and Prejudice - 'Pink' Paperback (and the chick lit legacy)
Washington Square Press, New York (1964).
During the postwar boom in higher education of the 1950s & 60s, publishers decided to capitalise on the growing number of women in university by repackaging Jane Austen in inexpensive, eye‑catching (often pink) paperbacks to position the books as campus-friendly reads for young women. The tactic succeeded commercially, but it also narrowed the way the books were perceived. This branding encouraged a view of Austen as chiefly a writer of romance for women and obscured the broader satirical, social, and economic concerns that have always animated her work. Prior to this, Austen was widely read and discussed by men and women alike.
Pride and Prejudice - Folio Society Hassall
Folio Society, London (1957).
The Folio Society's first Austen publication features crisp typography, an introduction by Richard Church, and ten delicate wood engravings by Joan Hassall. It was the first of a series of Austen novels, bound in matching designs (with different colours).
It has been reprinted multiple times – the first edition was bound by James Burn in quarter grey cloth, with yellow paper boards featuring a repeat pattern in pink by Hassall, and endpapers with a design in orange by Hassall.
The second impression was released in 1959, and the third in 1961. Text was reset for the 1975 boxed set edition.
Pride and Prejudice - Limited Editions Club / Heritage Press
Limited Editions Club, New York (1940). Illustrated by Helen Sewell.
In an era before Folio Society, the Limited Editions Club was well known for its beautiful collectible classics. Only 1,500 copies of their P&P edition were printed, each signed by the illustrator Helen Sewell. Sewell is known for her graceful line work (her illustrations here are lightly comical), and also illustrated Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books. The introduction by Frank Swinnerton is fairly paternalistic (usual for its time). Issued in a marbled slipcase.
The Heritage Press edition is the cheaper unsigned version. It has the same internal contents and it bound in quarter leather with marbled boards.
Pride and Prejudice - first paperback edition
Penguin Illustrated Classics, London (1938). Wood engravings by Helen Binyon.
The first paperbacks were published by Penguin in 1935, with Pride and Prejudice coming out early as part of their new Penguin Illustrated Classics series in 1938. Expectations were high for this series, and Penguin printed an astonishingly large print run of a million copies, 100,000 of each title. (Sales were disappointing as the cheap paper didn't do much justice to the lovely wood engravings that accompanied the volumes.)
Vintage Editions
Pride and Prejudice - English Idylls
J. M. Dent & Co, London (1907).
In 1907, Dent re-issued P&P in a fine “Series of English Idylls” edition with an introduction by George Saintsbury. It featured 24 colour plates including the frontispiece and decorative title page by Charles Brock. Each illustration was printed on special paper with tissue guards, and the volume was handsomely gilded and bound in cloth or vellum. Charles' watercolor illustrations in this edition are particularly lovely depictions of Austen’s world. Dent/Dutton reissued this title in 1922, with a reduced count of 16 illustrations.
Pride and Prejudice - First Colour Edition
J. M. Dent & Co, London (1898). 2 volumes.
The first edition of P&P with colour illustrations was created by the talented brothers Charles and Henry Brock. Issued as part of a ten-volume illustrated Austen set, P&P featured 6 full-color plates by Henry Brock in each of the two volumes. He initially drew pen-and-ink scenes that were then tinted with watercolors. The Brock brothers used then-new six-color lithography to achieve rich Regency-style illustrations.
Many American reprints reused these plates.
Pride and Prejudice - Illustrated Standard
Macmillan, London (1895).
In an effort to compete with Hugh Thomson’s beautiful ‘peacock' edition, Macmillan brought in Charles Brock to illustrate Pride and Prejudice, and it sold equally well. Thomson was then invited back to Macmillan to complete illustrations for the remaining five novels in the series (Emma, 1896; Sense & Sensibility, 1896; Mansfield Park, 1897; and an omnibus edition of Northanger Abbey & Persuasion, 1898).
The book features 40 pen and ink illustrations by Charles, and an introduction by Austen Dobson. Some later publishers added colour to the illustrations without Brock's permission, with fairly poor results.
Confusingly, this book is known as part of Macmillan's “Peacock Series” due to AA Turbayne's beautiful peacock endpaper design (he also did the pretty decorative cover design) but should not be confused with the Peacock Edition.
Pride and Prejudice - Peacock Edition
George Allen, London (1894).
Probably the most famous decorative edition, this is one of my favourite vintage designs ever! The “Peacock” edition features a gorgeous gilded cover illustrated by artist Hugh Thomson, with an ornate peacock spreading its tail across the green cloth binding. Inside, Thomson provided an enormous 160 illustrations – this was the first edition to fully illustrate the novel throughout (earlier editions at most had a frontispiece).
An original 1894 Peacock in fine condition is a holy grail for many collectors, and I usually see them go for around $3,000-$10,000 depending on condition. The closest modern facsimile is probably the Easton Press one. But I have this cheaper facsimile that I'm quite happy with.
☞ A colored version of this cover design is used in the RBA's popular Timeless Classics series.

Pride and Prejudice - First American Edition
Carey & Lea, Philadelphia (1832). 2 volumes.
The first US printing was titled Elizabeth Bennet; or, Pride and Prejudice. In the 19th century, American publishers could freely reprint British novels because there was no international copyright. Carey & Lea issued P&P in two volumes in 1832 as part of a set of Austen’s works. . This edition isn’t particularly beautiful – to save costs, they used cheap paper and a small, cramped font – but it’s historically significant since it made Austen’s work accessible in America. Surviving copies are scarce (some have pretty rebindings), and are mainly of interest to collectors of Austen or early American publications.

Pride and Prejudice - First Edition (Egerton)
Thomas Egerton, London (1813). 3 volumes.
The first edition included no illustrations nor fancy binding – many surviving sets were actually rebound in leather by their owners. A complete first edition is exceedingly rare (1500 copies in the first print run, most of which went to libraries) and commands at best tens of thousands of dollars, with most sets selling for over a hundred thousand.
You can also check out the 2025 facsimile edition you can check out if you want the experience without the expense.
