Introduction

What is the Scribner Illustrated Classics Series?

The Scribner Illustrated Classics series has been around since the turn of the last century and the books are well regarded for their consistently high quality. The volumes are beautifully illustrated, thoughtfully typeset, and carefully bound.

Scribner's Magazine was launched in 1887, and was the first magazine to introduce color illustrations.
Which were the earliest volumes in this series?

Charles Scribner’s Sons (aka Scribner’s or Scribner) were well-known in the late 1880s through Scribner’s Magazine, the first of any magazine to introduce color illustrations. Building on this renown, they became one of the earliest American publishers of gift editions of children’s books with color illustrations, starting with Eugene Field’s Poems of Childhood in 1904, followed by Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses in 1905. Scribner then commissioned The Queen’s Museum and other fanciful tales by Frank R Stockton in 1906, and Arabian Nights illustrated by Maxfield Parrish in 1909.

The birth of Scribner’s illustrated classics

The early collections of folktales, poems, and short stories by Scribner’s gained such popularity that the publisher decided to illustrate a full-length novel. This led to the first ‘official’ book in the series (according to Princeton University Library’s Scribner finding aid): N. C. Wyeth’s illustrated edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, published on September 30, 1911. The previous four books were initially precursors to the series but were marketed under the ‘Illustrated Classics’ branding by 1920. These early volumes were typically quarto-sized hardcovers bound in black cloth with a pictorial plate on the front cover. The illustrations were commissioned from notable artists of the time, many by N. C. Wyeth, a former student of Howard Pyle who had gained recognition illustrating Scribner’s monthly magazines.

Treasure Island‘s success encouraged Scribner to continue with more illustrated novels, initially focusing on adventure stories for older children and often retaining Wyeth for the artwork. Over 12 years, Wyeth illustrated nine of the next 15 books, eventually contributing to 16 titles in the series. In 1925, Scribner expanded its definition of ‘classic’ to include another Wyeth-illustrated novel, Drums by James Boyd. They also republished earlier books from their catalogue for younger children, including Peter Pan and Wendy, Little Lord Fauntleroy and Wind in the Willows, originally released with pen and ink illustrations, but now updated with full color artwork.

Is the series still in print?

Books in the series have been re-released in various formats throughout the years, sometimes featuring new illustrators. Notable examples include Trina Schart Hyman’s delightful illustrations for Peter Pan, and Aldo Galli’s moving art for Watership Down.

In 1978 the company merged with Atheneum and became known as The Scribner Book Companies. They then began re-releasing the volumes illustrated by N. C. Wyeth, issuing one each year for the next 15 years. In 1990, Simon & Schuster acquired Scribner, adding new titles to the series under the Atheneum imprint. These included older classics such as Robin Hood and Robinson Crusoe that had been illustrated by N. C. Wyeth for other publishers, and new titles like The Call of the WildWhite Fang and The Red Badge of Courage in the early 2000s. More recently, titles such as BambiWatership Down and the new Hyman-illustrated edition of Peter Pan have been released during the recent series revival.

Contemporary Collection

The most recent contemporary collection, with eleven titles released between 2012 and 2019, features ‘soft’ hardback covers with spot varnish and foiling (you know those covers for kids that are a bit spongy? Not my favorite binding style, but good for cleaning off sticky fingerprints I guess).

These new volumes have been updated with text reset using the original typefaces, and Wyeth’s illustrations are newly reproduced from the original canvases. While the first printings typically contained larger selections of illustrations (e.g. the 1911 edition of Treasure Island contained 17 illustrations, whereas the 1933 edition contained only 12), these contemporary editions have reverted to including all the artwork of the first edition. Although vintage editions were made in the USA, the currently available books are predominantly printed in China.

For collectors, a few other sub-series are worth noting in addition to the contemporary designs. In 1955, Scribner released the classics series with newly-designed, full-color book jackets. And starting in 1981, Scribner began re-releasing the 15 volumes illustrated by N. C. Wyeth, releasing one each year until 1996.

How many books are in the Scribner Illustrated Classics series?

As often the case with these vintage series, the question of “how many” doesn’t have an easy answer. For most purists, the series consists of 40 books: 37 core books from the vintage series, with an additional three titles/illustrators added in the 2000s. However, if you broaden your scope to include other books that were occasionally advertised as being part of this series, but have a slightly different format, size or printing process to the core volumes (*these titles are highlighted below with an asterisk), you could easily add another 27 titles or more.

Series Scope and Variations

Over time, the series has been referred to and catalogued under many title variations, including “Scribner Illustrated Classics for Younger Readers”, “Scribner’s Illustrated Classics for Young Readers”, “Scribner Illustrated Classics for Younger People”, “Scribner’s Classics”, “Scribner Classics”, “Scribner Illustrated Classics”, and “Scribner’s Colored Classics”.

There is also occasional confusion with books from other series that have similar bindings, particularly when they were also illustrated by N. C. Wyeth. So, if you are searching for a title that doesn’t appear in the list below, it’s worth also checking out publications by David McKay (e.g. Arthur Conan Doyle’s The White Company, illustrated by N. C. Wyeth), Hampton Publishing, Minton Balch & Co (e.g. James Fenimore Cooper’s The Pilot, illustrated by Donald Teague), The Century Co, Cosmopolitan Book Corporation (e.g. Thomas Bulfinch’s Legends of Charlemagne, illustrated by N. C. Wyeth), and Penn Publishing Company (e.g. Lucy Foster Madison’s Washington, illustrated by Frank E. Schoonover), to name a few.
