Harper Muse Gothic Chronicles

About the series

Harper Muse’s Gothic Chronicles Collection gathers landmark works of Gothic and Gothic-adjacent literature in matching deluxe ‘naked' hardcovers (i.e. no dustjacket), with gold foil cover designs, stained page edges, and ribbon markers.

The interiors of each volume contain several full page pull-quotes with atmospheric flourishes. They're prettily designed but annoyingly (I think) often not placed near the relevant part of the text.

Inferno (Canticle I, The Divine Comedy) — Dante Alighieri, translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

A fascinating and haunting allegory of a narrator (Dante himself, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil) who journeys through the nine concentric circles of Hell, each level increasing in despair and wickedness. It explores such universal themes as the necessity for piety, the ramifications of sin, the inherent dangers of fame, the tension between this world and the afterlife, the eternal value of love, and the permanence of storytelling as an art form.

The Picture of Dorian Gray — Oscar Wilde

When the wealthy and beautiful Dorian Gray sees his portrait for the first time, he is seized with despair at the thought of losing his youth to time. In a reckless bargain, he pledges his soul so that the portrait will bear the marks of age and corruption while his own face remains flawless. As Dorian pursues a life of decadence and cruelty, the painting grows ever more monstrous–a haunting reminder of the cost of vanity and excess.
