360° Books by Yusuke Oono
Yusuke Oono's Sculptural Dioramas - 360°Books
On this page:
Introduction
Yusuke Oono’s 360°Books are delicately sculptural concertina books, with each design revealing a tiny laser-cut world suspended in motion – revealing cranes flying over Mount Fuji, a fairytale forest hiding Snow White, or a quiet mouse nibbling on some cheese.
The 360° book format (essentially a carousel book) was created by Japanese architect–designer Yusuke Oono and each title is designed to be read page-by-page or opened all the way so the silhouette layers align as a freestanding tableau. The books are quite small – most editions are ~12 cm (about 5 in) square with around 40 pages – and the laser cut designs look astonishingly delicate and beautiful. Pages are held together with sturdy string, and the booklets come inside a decorative paper case for protection.
Because the visual storytelling format is image-led and word-light, they can be enjoyed in any language. Early prototypes and limited edition lampshade releases drew quite a lot of international attention on design blogs, and commercial trade editions followed which helped to move the intricate concept from one-off prototypes to more widely available gift books. They work as contemplative flip-through books, but are also stunning displayed open as decor on your shelf.
