Introduction & Series Review
British publishing house Macmillan has a long publishing history (founded in 1843), and is traditionally considered to be one of the ‘Big Five’ English language publishers. This gives them an excellent back catalogue of classics texts and illustrations to draw from.
These beautiful gift editions are oversized volumes with die-cut covers, foiled and spot varnish details on thick coverboards, head and tail bands, sewn text block, foiled page edges and a ribbon marker. They are made to last! Due to the size, they are likely to be a bit cumbersome for small children to read, but they are perfect for a read-aloud at bedtime.
For the older reader (ahem, like me!), the books also include additional information about the history of the authors and artists involved in Macmillan’s original story collections, first published in the 1800s and early 1900s.
The Macmillan Gift Collection editions have foiled page edges, die-cut covers, ribbon markers, and spot varnish details on the boards, as seen here on the Complete Alice.
