Special Edition Book Boxes
If you're interested in the fun of surprise boxes that deliver new special editions to your doorstep every month or so, this is my roundup of the best collectible book boxes and reader subscription clubs.
I'll be honest and note that I do think the special edition subscription services industry is pretty saturated right now, resulting in many of the book clubs releasing overlapping titles, or sub-standard writing that might be very pretty but ultimately is not something you'll want to prioritise as your library grows. These days I buy a lot of my special editions from trade publishers because they are so much easier on the wallet (you can find these easily through my upcoming special edition tracker).
However, there is something very special about receiving a box of books in the mail, and over the years, I have subscribed (and unsubscribed!) to a number of different services – my longest running experiences as a subscriber have been with Goldsboro, Locked Library, FairyLoot, LitJoy and The Broken Binding). Although I don’t currently subscribe to every box on this list myself, I’ve included both my personal experiences and intel from other collector friends that I hope will help you on your own collecting journey.
If you'd like to recommend a subscription box to include here, please feel free to contact me.
p.s. A note on the subscription size estimates: most companies don’t publish subscriber counts or print‑run numbers. The ranges you’ll see here are ballpark estimates I've made based on public signals such as stated copy limits (e.g., numbered editions); waitlist and capacity statements; shipping & warehouse footprints; sell‑out patterns; and occasional revenue or shipment figures mentioned in interviews, press, and brand updates. I included them because they're interesting, but please don't bet your house on their accuracy.
What are the best book subscription boxes for special editions?

Notes:
- Usually great aesthetics (edges and interior art) and popular titles hold strong resale value.
- Waitlists open in cycles; keep an eye on “Subscribe” and Help pages.
- Timezones & patterns: shipping notices typically go out in UK business hours.
- Service experience is mixed – replacements are usually provided if needed, byt US/Canada tracking gaps are common since shipments route through third party consolidators (e.g. Evri).
