Other ways to find special editions
Stalk the Stores
There are a few stores that regularly release produce special editions, and you can visit their sites to see what they have available.
Waterstones (UK) have lots of signed editions, which often include sprayed edges and exclusive content. They ship internationally with reasonable rates for some countries, but they recently increased their shipping enormously for other locations (sigh, rip Australian orders), but they do send you a tracking number. There are typically between 1000-2000 copies of their exclusive editions produced.
Barnes and Noble (US) have lots of signed editions, which often include exclusive content and different dust jacket designs. They are a good store for US-based buyers, but it’s a bit hit and miss if they will ship books internationally – some books they will, some they won’t. You usually get a tracking number. There are typically “a few thousand” copies of their exclusive editions.
Goldsboro Books (UK) have special limited editions, sprayed edges and a couple of excellent book subscription programs (see below). As a bonus, all their books are hand covered with protective dust jackets and they come incredibly well wrapped. The number of exclusive edition copies produced ranges between a few hundred and a thousand, and they are usually numbered. Customer service used to be excellent, these days there is often a long delay if you are trying to contact them by email. Good for UK buyers but international shipping is expensive.
The Broken Binding (UK) make beautiful exclusive sprayed edge editions of fantasy, scifi and horror books. Excellent customer service. Good for UK buyers but international shipping is expensive.
Blackwells (UK) sometimes have signed editions, and international shipping is included in the price of the book. I’ve got some lovely Independent bookstore editions from here. Usually no tracking number is provided, but responsive customer service.
Indigo (Canada) have lots of signed editions and exclusive content, often replicating the B&N editions. International shipping outside of North America can be cost prohibitive.
LitJoy (US) have a shop where they sell special edition books with exclusive artwork, hidden covers, sprayed edges and other features. International shipping is not cheap, but the books are lovely.
Target (US) have a few exclusive editions. Good for US buyers but international shipping is often not available or may be cost prohibitive.
BooksAMillion (US) have a few exclusive editions. Good for US buyers but international shipping is usually not available or it’s cost prohibitive.
Dymocks (Australia) have a few exclusive editions, many are based on UK designs that previously were released by Waterstones. Good for Australian buyers but international shipping may be cost prohibitive.
Subscribe to boxes
Some of the book subscription boxes do sell individual titles. (Their subscription books are also fantastic, but I tend not to find a use for all the added merch they come with, so they’re not super cost effective in my case.) Some of the most popular subscription services include:
Goldsboro Books (UK) have book-only subscription programs: GSFF for science fiction and fantasy, and Prem1er for more general fiction (I have previously been a member and reviewed these clubs here if you’re interested in an unbiased non-rep view). International shipping is not cheap.
FairyLoot (UK/US) often have signed books with exclusive covers and sprayed edges. They have boxes with additional loot, and book-only subscriptions as well. Monthly subscribers get first opportunity to buy leftover stock, but some books make it to the shop and don’t usually last long. I’ve been a subscriber to this club. They have a UK and US distributor, but international shipping may be prohibitive to other locations. There’s quite a long waiting list. Note: I’ve previously been a subscriber to FairyLoot.
Illumicrate (UK/US) have special edition boxes that can be purchased as a one-off, which have signed books with sprayed edges, or exclusive covers. Monthly subscribers get first opportunity to buy leftover stock, but some books make it to the shop and don’t usually last long. They have a UK and US distributor, but international shipping may be prohibitive to other locations.
LitJoy Crate (US) have signed books with exclusive artwork and special dust jackets. You can get buy books directly from their store as well as subscribe to their boxes.
☞ I’ve more closely reviewed some LitJoy books here.
The Broken Binding (UK) subscription concentrates on one favourite back-list series at a time (typically around trilogy length). They produce one special edition title in the selected series each month until the set is complete, and then the next series begins the following month. They do feature the occasional stand-alone title. International shipping is expensive, and there is an extraordinarily long waitlist to join, but they produce lovely editions.
The Locked Library (UK) is a book-only subscription box that focuses on fantasy, science fiction and YA. The books are not signed, but they usually feature a slightly different cover design, detailed sprayed page edges and foiled designs under the dust jacket. It’s run by a major publisher (HarperCollins), and the titles are usually very popular, but customer service is quite difficult to get ahold of if you have issues. International shipping is expensive, but they send by courier with great tracking. Note: I’m a previous subscriber to The Locked Library.
Custom Stencilled Edges
In addition to the editions listed on this page, there are also several artists who also offer custom stencilled edges, and/or do very small runs of their own limited designs. Sometimes these options may be more affordable for you depending on your location. Some of the artists I think are doing the nicest work at the moment include:
- Inky Fox Books (UK)
- Kingdom Book Designs (UK)
- Kathy’s Sprayed Edges (Germany)
- Edged In Starlight (US)
- Bookish Signs (US)
- Libernations (US)
- Fig and Flowers (Australia)
- Custom Sprayed Edges (India)
A couple of other interesting options to consider are:
- Ruined By Fiction (India) who do custom foiled hardcover designs
- BriMarie (US) paints pretty hidden fore-edge paintings under gilt edging that you might like to check out as well ツ
Or just let me help you!
I’m on a lot of publisher’s mailing lists, and I often hear about upcoming releases before the general public. I’m also a collector, so I scour the shops for interesting books that will be coming out soon. Since preorders are often cheaper (and because special editions frequently sell out even before publication day), I decided to create this page to list all the special upcoming editions that you can buy without subscribing to a book box or doing anything else – just preorder the book you want straight from a store. Where possible, I include links to shops that do international shipping (some of these are affiliate links that give me a few pennies to cover site hosting but don’t cost you extra – so thank you most sincerely if you use them!) but I always recommend buying from your local independent brick and mortar shop if you can.
If you subscribe to my newsletter I’ll send you out occasional updates (or just regularly stalk this page, I update it at least every couple of weeks), and I also publish video reviews for the most beautiful books published each year, so check them out too if you think you might be interested. Otherwise, enough blather from me – go check out the books!
