Introduction

What’s going to be the next collectible pop-up book?

Pop-up books are getting increasingly expensive these days, so when you can save a few dollars by preordering (and support the authors and artists at the same time) it just makes sense! So to help you find the latest and greatest at the best possible price, this list includes details of the most beautiful pop-up book and paper engineering pre-orders on my radar. I’ve included those upcoming titles I think will be the most collectible, beautiful, and/or likely to be future prize winners, as well as titles that have been out of print for a while and are getting re-released.

What if I want to know more about already published pop-up books?

When finished, each working model glues back into the book on a special tab and folds away to make a kind of three dimensional dictionary or encyclopaedia. For each working model there is also a page called technical considerations which points out important features of the mechanism and suggests how it might be used to create original designs of your own. About

A graphic adaptation of the classic Sherlock Holmes mystery, with comic-book style illustrations, giant pop-ups and fold-out pages on every spread. ISBN US: 9781645178231; UK: 9781398808225.

Graphic Pops Series Review

This comic-book style adaptation of classic literature is a brilliant way to get the story into the hands of a younger audience. The pop-ups and story flaps are engagingly designed, adding a fun interactive element to the tale. The paper is a bit rough on my UK editions (although I think that help ensure an overall robustness), but the text is decently sized and the pop-up mechanisms are smooth.

Transformers: The Ultimate Pop-Up Universe

Paper engineer
Matthew Reinhart

Publisher
Insight Editions

Anticipated release date
Jun 15, 2024

Buy from

Amazon | Blackwells

Original 2013 edition (OOP): Amazon | Abes | eBay

About

Transformers shift, change, and rise to battle, including pull-tabs that let you watch the pop-ups cleverly change into entirely new paper creations. Features more than 35 iconic Transformers characters, including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, and more. Original publication date October 2013.

Review

The paper engineering is fantastically impressive, as the pop-ups cleverly and completely transform, just like the original Transformers themselves. The enormous Autobot Omega Supreme seems almost too tall to fit back into the book as he towers up out of a two-page spread to smash the Decepticons. The paper is relatively robust for an adult collector, but the book would require care in the hands of children, particularly as some of the tabs are quite stiff. (Review based on my original 2013 edition.)
